All Sports Tucson is gearing up for the upcoming Arizona football season with a countdown featuring history notes and a look ahead to the season. As fans eagerly await the start of fall camp in early August and the first game against New Mexico on Aug. 31, the countdown provides a way to keep Arizona football on their minds.
On the 64th day until kickoff, the tribute was made to Warner Smith, the best player to wear No. 64 for Arizona. Smith, a former offensive lineman for the Wildcats, passed away in 2018 after battling ALS. He was a key player during the Desert Swarm era and was recognized as a two-time All-Pac-10 honoree.
The current roster does not have any players listed as wearing No. 64, but Arizona’s safeties Owen Goss and Gunner Maldonado are making waves in the Big 12. Goss, a transfer from Colgate, and Maldonado are highly rated by Pro Football Focus for their performances on the field.
Additionally, junior wide receiver Tetairoa McMillan showcased his incredible ability with one-handed catches, leaving fans in awe. McMillan’s talent was evident in his memorable one-handed touchdown grab during a game last season.
As Arizona fans eagerly anticipate the upcoming season, the countdown by All Sports Tucson serves as a reminder of the rich history of Arizona football and the promising future ahead.
