According to federal authorities, a Russian hacker aimed at US government computers in Maryland

A 22-year-old Russian man, Amin Stigal, has been indicted for conspiring to hack into Ukrainian and U.S. federal government computer systems, according to federal prosecutors. Stigal allegedly worked with his country’s military intelligence agency to destroy Ukrainian government systems and data in January 2022. He also targeted a federal government agency in Maryland using similar techniques. Stigal is accused of infecting Ukrainian systems with a “cyberweapon” designed to destroy them and selling data on Ukrainians to generate fear about the country’s security. He faces up to five years in prison and is currently at large, with the FBI offering a $10 million reward for information on his whereabouts or cyberattacks. U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland stated that Stigal conspired with Russian military intelligence on the eve of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine to launch cyberattacks targeting the Ukrainian government, as well as its allies like the United States.
