The Prince George’s County Council has scheduled special primary and special general elections to replace former at-large council member Jamel “Mel” Franklin, who resigned after being charged in a felony theft scheme. Franklin allegedly embezzled campaign funds for personal expenses. The special primary election is set for Aug. 6, with the special general election on Nov. 5. Candidates have until July 5 to file for candidacy.
Franklin, who served on the council for nearly 14 years and was known for his advocacy of fiscal prudence, resigned abruptly after the charges were filed. The Maryland State Prosecutor’s Office alleges that Franklin misused $124,450 from his campaign account for personal use.
At-large seats were established in 2016 to diversify the council’s focus and enhance institutional memory by allowing lawmakers to serve in both district and at-large seats. Franklin’s departure has left a vacancy on the council, prompting the need for the special elections. The council is now searching for a candidate to fill Franklin’s seat.
The upcoming elections will be critical in determining the future direction of the Prince George’s County Council as they work to fill the void left by Franklin’s resignation. The community will be closely watching as candidates vie for the opportunity to represent the county in this important role.
