Parents of missing Mexican students demand answers from López Obrador and Sheinbaum

Claudia Sheinbaum made history by becoming the first woman and person of Jewish heritage to be elected president of Mexico. She promised to keep the country on a path toward reform and justice, but for the parents of 43 college students abducted in 2014, her promise remains unfulfilled. The students were abducted in Guerrero, Mexico, and after initial investigations were closed, independent investigators exposed that torture was used to obtain testimonies.

A truth commission in 2022 found that local, state, and federal authorities were involved in the disappearance of the students. Almost a decade later, only three students’ remains have been identified via DNA, and the rest remain missing. The parents have requested military records from the outgoing president, as they believe these records hold crucial information about the disappearance of their sons.

Former government officials, including Mexico’s former attorney general and the former director of Mexico’s Criminal Investigation Agency, have been accused of covering up the likely massacre of the students. The parents are continuing their fight for answers and justice, independent of any political affiliations.

They are scheduled to meet with the outgoing president to discuss the case further, as they hope for answers before Sheinbaum takes office in October. The parents are determined to continue their fight for their sons, emphasizing that their movement is about the fight for life and justice, and not tied to political agendas.
